Bath’s Next Biggest Hotel May be 198-bed Lifestyle Hotel after New Plan Gains Approval

The Allen Building on James Street West for Bath College is set to be demolished and transformed into a 198-bed lifestyle hotel after councillors approved its revised designs.

Dexter Moren of Dexter Moren Associates commented that his business was damaged by the refusal of its original design application in June. His new revised hotel design is 1.4 metres shorter, with a new zinc colour, and four fewer bedrooms. The developer, Dominvs Group was given permission to go ahead with the new designs by the Bath and North East Somerset Council.

While the previous application earned 168 objections, the new development was approved by five votes to three, winning against the Bath Preservation Trust and Heritage England.

Dominvs Group claims that the development will create 80 to 100 new jobs and boost the local economy by up to £4.1million, but Cllr Paul Crossley is against the application, saying the council experienced trouble in the past by approving developments without evaluating its economic impact. He comments, “It’s very well saying it will create 100 jobs, but if 10 B&Bs go under you’ve lost 100 jobs.”

The commercial director, Daisy Walsh reaffirms that the sale is good for both students and staff, as they will enjoy positive ongoing benefits from it, from apprenticeships to free rent until September 2019.
