Aldi Fights Back: This is Why it May Yet Be Able To Open a Second Store in Cheltenham

The supermarket chain reacts to two borough council refusals for site by Arle Court Roundabout, A40 Golden Valley Bypass and M5.

Hinton Properties (Grovefield Way) Ltd has in the last 11 months submitted two planning applications to create a store on land off Grovefield Way in The Reddings on behalf of Aldi.

Both plans were rejected by the borough council. One in December last year, and the other in October 2018.

Hinton Properties has since appealed both rejections stating that: “The appellants’ primary position is that the development proposal conforms with the adopted Development Plan and there are no material considerations indicating the development should be refused.”

A third bid is now being made for the new store in Cheltenham, as Aldi has refused to give up on building on the land.

The first and second applications were rejected by the council because several councillors believed building a new Aldi when there is already an existing Asda superstore would cause extra traffic on the already busy area.

The Reddings Residents Association also claimed that building an Aldi near the busy roundabout could bring 282 extra vehicles per hour.

Members of the committee however, welcome the proposal to bring in more office buildings into Cheltenham after hearing the town is short of sites for more jobs.

The Planning Inspectorate plans to deal with both appeals at a single inquiry on January 8 2019 that has been scheduled to last for six days.
