Professional Driver Caught Speeding at 109mph inn Somerset, Banned for Seven Days

A professional dump truck driver, Craig Stephen Wells, was caught speeding in Somerset and has been placed on a driving ban for seven days. He appeared in the dock before Somerset Magistrates and pleaded guilty to exceeding the 70mph speed limit on the A303 dual carriageway, two and a quarter mile east of Wincanton on May 5. The driver, who had been speeding at 109mph, responded that a lengthy driving ban would leave him unable to provide for his family of seven.

It was observed that he had a clean driving licence at the time of the incident.

Wells was “truly sorry” for his actions. He agreed that it was a very silly and irresponsible thing to do, explaining how he had let himself and his family down. He, however, pleaded that a loss of his job will prevent him from paying rent and bills for his family, which were already due.

In his words: “We are already in financial difficulties being one month behind in rent and having to use food banks.”

The magistrates disqualified him from driving for seven days, fined him £366, and ordered him to pay a £36 victim surcharge and £45 towards costs.
