Dorset teacher, Katherine Malyon, 28 years old, had an inappropriate relationship with a female pupil and engaged in sexual activity with the then 15-year-old girl. According to Bournemouth Crown Court, the teacher even sent the pupil explicit messages and took the innocent underage on days out.

The relationship between Malyon and the pupil began in 2017 when the girl sought support to the teacher.

As told by Rob Welling, prosecuting, their teacher-pupil relationship was healthy at first. However, it began to be different and was noticed by nearly everybody at the school, including the headteacher.

According to Mr Welling, Malyon had undergone training and so she knew the forbidden relationships with pupils. She was even warned by the school’s headteacher about her being too close with the girl.

The relationship was said to have been developed when the teacher kissed the pupil. Their relationship continued in secrecy with Malyon allowing the girl to come to her at home and even go with her on a London trip.

In June of 2018, the girl told her mum about the gist of the story after a friend saw a picture of her and the teacher kissing. The police were then involved and the teacher was suspended.

“This was a very clear abuse of trust. [Malyon] was very aware of [the pupil’s] vulnerability,” Mr Welling said.

David Swinton, Malyon’s defending party, said the teacher was well-qualified, respectable and hard-working.

However, she had suffered mental problems such as OCD and depression.

Malyon was questioned by the police and she said that she loved the girl and would like to marry her.

Mr Swinton said, “[Malyon] has a great deal of remorse. She is understanding and coming to terms with what she has done. She got very emotionally involved. She found it difficult to deal with but did not want to shut that door.”

“She was a very dedicated teacher – she’s lost that now,” Mr Swinton added.

Found guilty, Malyon was sentenced to 2 years and 4 months for engaging in sexual activity with a minor and 16 months for having two sexual activity with a minor while functioning as a trusted party.

Malyon was also added to the sex offenders’ register for 10 years, made a subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and given 10 years of restraining order.
