According to a report presented to the Devon County Council’s Children Scrutiny Committee, the rate of teenagers self- harming themselves is on the rise.  There are around fourteen thousand teenagers aged between 10-19 years old who are suspects of self-harming themselves.

The vice of self-harming is more alarming in Torbay in the southwest part of Devon than in any other part of the country. Most of the teenagers self-harming themselves don’t visit any medical facility to checkup. The commissioner for the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services has tabled the report to the council for further scrutiny. The Clinical Commission Group is supposed to take the necessary action to end the vice among teenagers.

According to the 2015 public health data, it’s only four hundred and sixty-eight teenagers who are in a hospital with self-harming ailments. The most noticeable fact is that Devon has the highest number of self-harming teenagers when compared to the whole of England. Poisoning is the typical scenario being used by teenagers to hurt themselves. The most used drug in self-hurting by teenagers is Paracetamol. The boys are the worst affected in the county as compared to girls. The report indicates that 10% of the girls and 30% of the boys had self-harmed the previous year.

According to another report by the Good Childhood Report (2018), girls are more likely to self harm themselves than boys. Most of the children and young people self-harming themselves are attracted to people of the same gender.

The self-harming habit is an outward expression of the underlying emotional state of the teenager. The number of teenagers presenting themselves to emergency services in hospitals is not the only ones affected. Some children don’t present themselves to the hospital after self-harming. Therefore, those who are not showing themselves to health facilities should get the best moral support available.
