Road In Cornwall Revealed To Be The Most Dangerous In The Southwest

The stretch of A3082 near St. Blazey is the most dangerous road in Southwest, according to data from the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).

In a study of fatal crashes between 2014 and 2016 carried out by insurer Ageas in collaboration with the RSF in which data was analysed and used to create an interactive map of the most dangerous roads, it was discovered that a section of this road between the junction with the A390 at St Blazey and the B3415 and B3269 near Fowey in Cornwall was the riskiest for road drivers.

The study also showed that the most improved road in the South West was the A38 between junctions 22 and 25 of the M5. Other roads such as the A3078 between the A390 at Probus and St Mawes, and Western Road in Launceston as well as, in Devon, the A3079 between Hoslworthy and Okehampton were highlighted as high risk also.

A total of 30,248 fatal and serious crashes across the UK between 2014 and 2016 have prompted Ageas and the RSF to call for an immediate investment of £75 million from the Government and a further £75 million annually for five years thereafter to improve the riskiest roads, which they believe would prevent 1,100 fatal and serious injuries over the next two decades.

“It’s unacceptable that road crashes continue to cost lives. It’s also shocking that they cost society £35bn each year – that’s nearly 2% of GDP and more than we spend on primary education and GP services combined,” Andy Watson CEO of Ageas Insurance, said about the findings of the report:

“It’s shocking to see that drivers who use the A3082 are living with a high risk of death or serious injury as they use this road and other roads in their area. We deal with the devastating aftermaths of serious road crashes every day. That’s why we’re calling for this investment. Infrastructure safety means much more than just filling in potholes. A reduction in crashes won’t just save lives – it’ll significantly benefit the economy.”
