Match Report: Wasps 19-30 Bristol Bears

There was an unfancied away win for Bristol Bears at Wasps’ Ricoh Arena. Callum Sheedy posted an assured performance to help his side with 15 points. Ryan Edwards pitched in with a brace to help Bears to their first victory on away turf in this season’s Premiership Rugby Cup.

Edwards was in remarkable form and was unstoppable by Wasps in both halves. Shaun Malton scored in the 15th minute as Bears continued to race to victory.

The victory comes as a breath of fresh air for manager Pat Lam, whose team has been faltering on opposition territory this term. It spells of consecutive victory for the 50-year-old as he leads his side to Premiership action next weekend.

Josh Bassett scored the curtain-raiser in the 16th minute but it was quickly overturned by a double from Edwards. Both sides then went into the break level at 13 points apiece.

Bristol stamped their intent soon after the interval when Malton and Sheedy combined to register.  Wasps’ Lima Sopoaga scored two penalties and finished the game with an impressive 14 points. With the game seeking a one-point, Sheedy scored his third penalty while Edwards ensured the win with another point.

Highlights of the match

The minute silence for Armistice Day was quite remarkable. Soon after, the boys got down to business. Callum Sheedy scored the first of his hat-trick of penalties as Bristol Bears came out firing in the rain.

Wasps found the equalizer through a Sopoaga penalty. There was a brilliant pass from the All Black flyoff to assist Bassett on the far left

Wasps took the initiative and dominated the opening periods of the first half but O’Conor and Luatua combined to assist Edwards

It was when Bears eventually secured that seven-point lead thanks to Sheedy that victory seemed touchable.

There were lots of superb performers but the BT Sport commentary team named Piers O’Conor the Man of the Match. Playing against his former team, O’Conor was indeed a joy to watch. He featured as a fullback and in the center. O’Conor deserved credit for both of Ryan Edwards’s goals in the game.
